The Silly Things We Do |
|||
| Stop and think about it. Taking the battery out of a clock does not stop time. But it may help to help you to perpetuate your ignorance of what time it really is. Working diligently to manufacture a philosophy of life that excludes God does not alter the universe in any way. But it can keep you busy until reality finally brings you face to face with Him. People do many silly things in life. Lots of folks carefully wash their hands, and then wipe them dry on a dirty towel. They get their hair trimmed just right, shower, and put on their most expensive clothes, then go to a party and get drunk, staggering around out of their minds, eventually vomiting and ruining everything. Or they pay for fresh milk, and then leave the carton half open on the table or in the refrigerator. We take vitamin supplements (for our health) and then eat fast-food -- or smoke cigarettes. And so on. In the same way, people want a good and meaningful life. We all want to be happy, fulfilled. Most of us want to be satisfied that our time here was well spent and rewarding. But then we spend decades running away from the very One (and only One) who is able to really help us make sense of things. Or we see the things that are wrong in most religions -- but then avoid God Himself, while simply embracing other silly human ideas and practices. We want spirituality. We need spiritual life. But we reject the only Spirit in the universe that can make us whole. We say that we want social justice and for things to be right. But when God gives us a chance to do something about it -- by getting our own hearts right with Him -- we then decide to play politics or talk philosophy instead. Is that stupid or what? Jesus Christ was the One Right Man -- the only truly sinless man in all human history. He was God's eternal Son, who came to earth to be our HELP, our Savior, our Shepherd. So we promptly murder Him and then build countless religious and philosophical monuments in His name. And now today, many others are still rejecting His offer to rescue them, to give them what their innermost heart is truly longing for -- real spiritual life. Jesus died on a cross to save us from our sins. But He did not stay dead. He carried away our sins, our shame, our transgressions. He died. He was buried. He went down into the shadow regions of death and hell to proclaim His victory over sin and evil. And then He rose again, up from the dead and out of the grave. Not as some kind of rotting zombie-like creature that we might see in silly movies, but as the victorious Champion of God, the Son of Righteousness, the Savior of the world. Today, Jesus Christ is alive and at the Father's right hand. He's able to save all who will come to Him. He's able to rescue from sin, and to transform all who hope in Him. Jesus Christ is the One -- and only One -- who can help us when we truly reach the end of our rope. He is the One who will save us when we call out to Him. Why continue on the road of meaningless behavior? Why keep trying to pretend that God is not there? Why keep acting as though God has not been calling to your heart? Why not surrender to Jesus Christ today? Why not confess your sinfulness, and ask God to forgive you? Jesus died on the cross for you, for your sins. And He will save you when you call on Him. Jesus said: "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30, NRSV) Jesus Christ is the One and only One who can give you the inner life and light you need to make sense of this world. He will take you and make you into a true child of God. He will give you eternal life with God. He will give you the glories of heaven. In Christ you will never be alone again, because Jesus and the Father will take up residence with you, just as Jesus promised: "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him." (John 14:23, NKJ) You can continue to complain about life, and to wonder why things are the way they are, if you want to. You can keep hoping against hope that someday everything will make sense. Or you can do something about it. Turn to the One who can and will give you real life, real meaning, and real answers. Turn to Jesus Christ and get a new life. Don't put it off any longer. There's no need, and no good reason to go on wandering in the dark. God offers you the eternal life and light of His own Son, Jesus Christ. Bow your heart to Him today and admit your need of forgiveness and cleansing. Surrender to Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life. Commit yourself to following Him for the rest of your earthly life. Why waste another day in meaningless wandering and confusion, despair and misery? Jesus Christ will show you a whole new life. There's an ancient promise in the Bible that is fulfilled in everyone who surrenders to Jesus Christ. God says, through the prophet Ezekiel: "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them." (Ezekiel 36:25-27, NRSV) Jesus Himself said: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive... (John 7:37-39, NKJ) There are many, many more promises given to us by God in the Bible. As you begin to walk your new pathway of faith in Jesus Christ, you will soon discover many of these promises, and many other good things. You will also discover that God always makes good on His promises. Trust in God. Spend time each day reading the Bible -- to learn about the things God has done and said. Discover the truth about Jesus Christ. Pray every day, sharing honestly with God all that is in your heart. Talk to Him about the problems you face, the questions you have. Ask Him to teach you, to lead you in the right way. And then be willing to follow His direction. Find a good church -- a place where Christians meet to talk about what Jesus is doing in their lives, a place where they worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. God is near you, even now. He knows all about your life, all about your needs. But you must stop ignoring Him if you want a full and meaningful walk with Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you will discover what God wants to do in your life, and how you can be a part of the good things He is doing in this world. So make your choice. Pray now and give yourself to God through faith in Jesus Christ. If you need help in doing this, you may want to click here. If you're not sure God can really give you a new life, you may find help here: I suggest that you begin your reading in the Bible with the Gospel of John, the fourth book of the New Testament. Another great portion of the Bible is the book of Romans, farther along in the New Testament. God bless you as take some positive action, allowing God to truly change your life. Jim |
